تعبر هذه اللوحة عن إرادة الإنسان في التغلب على صراعاته مع الحياة، فهو وحده بطل تلك الصراعات، ولا أحد غيره يسيطر على المشهد. بينما تهب عواصفها محاولة إعجازه فهو يبحر في خضمها بقوة ومثابرة. تسيطر على اللوحة الأجواء الغائمة للتعبير عن الصعوبة، بينما استخدمت الألوان الساخنة (الأحمر والأصفر) للتعبير عن قوة مشاعر الصبر والإرادة.
